He Lives With His Remorse

Taking your anger on the chin

He swallows his pride in view of the day unfolding,

Sending his love via express to undo all he’s withholding,

Shame rides him hard for his petty revenge,

Understanding if you now have a need to avenge.

**

Today sees a different version to who he was yesterday,

His thoughts and emotions healing the pain that held sway,

Wishing he could undo the unfortunate past,

Knowing now that his mistakes are forever cast.

**

He takes comfort knowing he’s learnt his lesson by trial,

Living for so long in utter denial,

Wondering if forgiveness is now his for the taking,

Knowing he doesn’t deserve it, not when it was your heart breaking.

**

This weighs heavily upon his broad shoulders,

And the guilt is one that quietly smoulders,

He’ll open his heart, showing you his vulnerability,

Especially if it’ll end this gut-wrenching hostility.

**

He’s not a bad man, not by any stretch,

Although he’s well aware you think him a wretch,

He wants to visit and tell you his side,

But first he sends his apology as he has nothing to hide.

**

He doesn’t strive to be perfect, just a tad better,

Listing his misdeeds within society through an open letter,

He’ll make amends to see this right,

And stress his remorse without putting up a fight.

**

He needs to lay his soul bare to sleep through the pain,

And promises never to make the same mistake again,

They’ll be some who’ll hold this forever against him,

Plastering his character as unloveable and certainly grim.

**

But for those that welcome him back into the fold,

You’ll see him bend his knee to allow you to scold,

Taking his lashes like an honourable man should,

He’ll then beg for absolution from those who once understood.

**

He’ll use his tomorrows to show you his regret,

And trusts you’ll know it’s a lesson he’ll never forget,

It’s made him a better man, of that he is sure,

And made him face his demons to fully mature.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

My trust issues could never. Like I'll never be able to forget what he did, whatever it is. And I'll always be so sus of him for everything. This is why I prefer to stay single 😅😅 Loved your poem my friend!
