everyone told me
to dream of
being a princess
with a crown
billowing veils of lace
and glass shoes
that pinch your toes.
and then they said
a big man
will come
to carry you away
and he will keep you safe.
i never do what i am told.
so i told the man to
get off his high horse
so i can ride.
i said
that i dream of
black hands
instead of
white dresses
and i like pretty things
like blood and swords
and that i do not need
to be saved.
i lived happily
ever after.

I like pretty things like blood and swords too! I also never do what I am told! Loved your poem!
I love this! I hope you don't mind me saying this, but I feel like in some ways it's the counter piece to these lines I wrote in "Romantic In My Own Way": Little boys filled with thoughts of being heroic Introduced to the idea of always being stoic Taught that emotion is weakness I feel like we're both countering notions of what men and women should be according to fantasy and romance novels. Well, a lot of fiction actually
"i never do what i am told" Y E S !
Princess with a clean crown! Good good!
