Greetings From This Unreasonable Hour

Merry Christmas to all

A warmth spreads across my chest moving down to my feet,

As I bathe in the sunlight infusing my slumber,

I’m reluctant to open my eyes to the dawn as the sun greets me,

And I lazily lay as my ears pick up the morning tune,

As the birds sing me a lullaby to awaken my day.

**

A kookaburra’s laugh right outside my window,

What is it you find so funny today, Mr Bluewing?

Do you find it funny that you are waking me at an unreasonable hour?

But you know you’ll be forgiven with your cheeky cackle,

And astonishingly good looking wings.

**

The clouds play hide and seek for the sun as it disappears, only to reappear,

The light infused balls of fluff forming shapes in my imagination,

Shimmering prettily while threatening a downpour,

Cooling the air on a humid summer dawn,

Wallowing in the heavily suffused precipitation to come.

**

The air is still, the traffic nonexistent,

Of course it is, it’s 5am Christmas morning,

Santa has been and gone and the world still slumbers,

Except for me!

Awake at such a ridiculous hour — listening to the unusual silence of an abnormally quiet world.

**

A refuse removal truck off in the distance,

The only sign of humanity existing other than I,

Not even a single dog’s bark or a single child’s laugh,

Just silence, broken by that solo truck and the chorus of birdsong,

Stillness that makes one question one’s solitude.

**

Inside not a sound stirring,

The cats napping after a special breakfast conned at the crack of dawn,

Sated by the treated gift of pulped chicken,

A special treat appreciated by both,

Despite the time — in fact, far better BECAUSE of the time.

**

The clouds begin to darken,

The shimmering sun hiding from view,

The wheel of a car heard in the far distance,

As the bird chorus escalates to a crescendo of glorious sound,

Begging me to awaken at this ridiculous hour of the day.

**

The high pitched tunes rise in all their glory,

Calling for the world to celebrate the day,

The hour way too early, but what do the birds care,

Laying here enjoying my solitude and the sun peeks over the edge of the cloud,

And I smile as I send out a Merry Christmas to all.
