A call rings out
that's meant only for some
and they're the ones with no doubt
or fear as they do what needs done.
Their hearts beat fast
and their adrenaline surges,
never fearing this call's their last
running is not an option, nor even an urge.
It's the cry for help driving them to rush through the crowd
and it's something they do with zeal and pride.
Sirens and screams wailing so loud
they'll face dangers and never, ever hide.
They are the first line
holding the beasts at bay
called on by the divine
to fight the monsters every day.
They're more than a number
or a code on the airwaves.
All of them someone to remember
as they swoop in to make the saves.
When one is lost
it's felt by all
because there is an unmeasurable cost
when one's sacrifice means a fall.
They aren't remembered every day
or even given the proper respect
and it's sad to say
but it's not something they expect.
They do it for us
because they've answered a call
to fight what's unjust
and to protect us all.
When they go down
it's felt everywhere
and from town to town
life just doesn't seem fair.
But, remember it's not you that hurts the most
because somewhere there's someone to whom they aren't coming home.
From the mothers and wives, fathers and husbands, to whom they become a ghost,
to children, they hug as they struggle to explain that daddy or mommy are gone.
In the blink of an eye, it can happen to anyone,
and those that run towards it instead of away are a special type.
Not everyone runs into danger, a distinction held by just some,
and those brave ones are an example of the best of us all, and what we could be...
