Exhausted

The day started out like any other and she raced to the top of the hill. She knew he would be there. She knew he would be waiting for her sweet arrival. The last few days were slow but he was always right there. The past few months were gloomy but she could see the silver lining. Her feet touched the top and her eyes widened. He wasn’t there. That’s okay, she was early he’d be there soon. The time passed ever so slowly and the clock began to make noise in her mind. But still she waited. She knew he would be there. It was hot and she was brave. It was late and she was lonely. There in the distance, could that possibly be him? No? Wait…. Maybe? Ugh. why? Where was he?

The beating in her chest suddenly rising and the thought of being wrapped in his arms crossed her mind. Her hands began to shake and her body began to tingle. Her throat became clogged with something more resembling more of a whale than a frog, and she closed her eyes to listen.

To the wind and the stars that were surfacing over the earth. To the water flowing in the nearby creak. To the bugs flailing about around her body. To the loneliness setting deep within her heart.

The feeling of positive defeat was starting to pour over her and she wanted nothing more than to fall right then and there but still, even then, she waited.

She wrinkled her face and scrunched up her nose. Blinked her eyes twice and became very cold. The rain started to pour and she pulled up her shirt. Her feet were sinking into the ever so soggy dirt.

He still wasn’t there and still she was waiting. Her heart cracked a little and began palpitating. Her brows furrowed lighty and her eyes fell to dust. Don’t do this to me. You have to come. You must.

She thought to herself in spite of her doubt.

I beg of you please!

Once more in a silent shout.

The night was so dark, so wet, cold, and clammy.

Why hasn’t he come? What things could have happened? Is he a live? Did he break a bone? Pull a muscle? Rip a tendon? What the fuck could have happened?

Why must I be alone?

She almost gave up. She almost gave in. she almost lost everything. She threw her hope to the ground. Her hands to the wind.

She turned and started back down the hill. She couldn’t wait any longer. She was done. She’d had enough. She was becoming very ill. Slow strides down the hill. Lost eyes and a cold heart. Blank stares into the abyss. No words tofix her heart.

It was over, the chain was broken. The first time he wasn’t there. The dissapoint-

Footsteps. Fast oncoming footsteps. It can’t be. It just can’t be.

Her eyes widened and her mouth bore a grin. Her heart jumped out of her chest and her eyes regained their shine. Her heart stapled itself up. Her brows loosened with ease. Her hands slowly freed. Her body tingled no more. Her head wasn’t full and her doubt drifted away. It was time for the one thing she had waited for. The reason she’d stayed. She turned and look him dead in his eyes and held out one hand.

And to her surprise.

He stopped mid sprint and stared with rivers in his eyes. All that she had also did he. The pain was mutual but the love was there you see.

For 26 yrs they met on this hill and for the rest of their life they had laughed about it still.

He got down on one knee and pulled out a ring.

“ If I can’t have anything else in life that I want or need. Would you please do me the favor, the honor, please give me the pride and strength to say you are mine. Will you for your heart’s sake be my whole life? ”

She walked to that man and looked down at him calmly. Told him to stand, then looked up at him boldly.

She could barely move because she was so cold and tired from waiting. She felt so very old. But with the last of what she had in her and for whatever reason her heart decided, she spoke these words.

“ yes. You have my world and my love and my soul. We will be one til we are grey and old. There will be no love sweeter or richer than ours and even when we’ve gone we’ll make up one of the worlds brightest shining stars”

And the rest of the night followed as they sleepily walked home.

Once they arrived their heads hit the pillows and there rested not two but one complete soul.
