Every Day Is A Blessing
Grateful to be alive
As the sun hovers just below the horizon,
She opens her eyes to a brand new day,
No hurry to arise and enter the rush hour,
She lays and reminisces about her yesterday.
***
She wallows in her memories, some of pain and others of happiness,
Realising she has much to be grateful for, lessons learned,
Love received, memories blessed, experiences lived,
Friendships made, losses grieved and a heart that’s been burned.
***
Not a minute of regret, not even the bad times,
Because they have all made her exactly who she is today,
Some lessons were easy, some experiences where glorious,
But others were painful, terrible losses where she was made to pay.
***
Still she knows she is truly blessed,
Life has both battered and celebrated her existence,
Dishing up all she is in need of at any given moment,
Ensuring she learned with all its persistence.
***
She remembers the horrid news that she’d never be a mother,
Devastation wreaked havoc for many years,
Until magic and miracles showed they do really exist,
As she was informed of her pregnancy amid happy tears.
***
Delirious with giddy emotions, a dream come true,
She thanked her lucky stars for this precious of gifts,
Treasuring every moment for all the years to come,
Blessed at the outcome, welcoming of the miracle shifts.
***
Her mind wanders to the perfect meeting of the minds,
A chance encounter of the generosity of a new friend,
Reminded of the thirty years of support she received,
And was able to return, right up to the very end.
***
The loss and grief was horrific, shattering her to pieces,
Still she’d not change a minute or hold any regrets,
Thankful for the time, the love, the memories, the friendship,
The strength, the support, together through the upheavals and upsets.
***
She remembers the people here yesterday and gone today,
Reliving the good, the bad and even the in between,
Grateful for every minute, for the laughter, the tears,
The highlights, the heartbreaks and the boring routine.
***
She watches now as the sun rises in the far distance,
Bringing about the daylight hours of a glorious new day,
And she smiles as she shelves all her memories,
Knowing she is blessed to have woken, basking in the warmth of the sun’s bouquet.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
