Even Caged Birds Sing

Inevitables

I tried to stop time

But the hands moved still

Tried to trap the breeze

But I never will

Tried to close down thoughts

But they linger on

Tried to cover ears

But I hear the songs

These inevitables

Whisper on and on

Memories like leaves

Fall and pile so tall

And at times I gather

But at times I fall

In that pile of leaves

Of inevitables

Even caged birds sing

Of free days now gone.

I loved you, my dear

And I love you still

Tried to shut my heart

But I never will

Tried to hate, forget

Tried to harden, yet

Though they fade away

Still, I bless your steps.

I still cry when I

Can't recall your eyes

And though I can't say

All my heart, still I

Know that you were here

Though that time's passed by

I still feel you near

Though you said goodbye.

If one day your shores

Should at last reach mine

I pray I could say

You weren't left behind

I carried you, still

Though it hurt too long

Even caged birds sing

Of the days now gone

It was beautiful

Nonetheless, my love

It was meaningful

And it still lives on

In my mind rent-free

Maybe in your dreams

It's Inevitable

Even caged birds sing.
