A Strife as Old as Time

Feeling heavy in spirit

With a broken heart

Your poisoned dart

Aimed, fired, and hit true

Fire shooting in my veins

There are stones on my chest

Each placed by your hand

Every secret learned

Another dagger thrown

Sensitive spots found

Until I become a hardened shell

My choice is simple

Die or live

Lie down or stand up

Be a victim or a survivor

I have the power to choose

I held my tongue long enough

It’s time to right some wrongs

To correct some lies

To set things straight

To deliver the proper dosage

Of the antivenom to your vitriol

So that I can soar

Soar high

Higher than an eagle

On the winds of joy

Gliding upon rays of sunshine

Full of pride

That I didn’t stoop

To the level that you chose

Showing I’m the better person

More reliable in character

So your barbs no longer stick

They bounce off my thickened skin

I no longer believe a word you say

Come near, sit a spell, and listen to tales of old as I sit and rock by my fire. I'll serve you some cocoa and cookies as I tell you of the time long gone by when your Greats-greats once lived.
