Empty Cradle

After It's Gone Challenge

Although I never held you,

I carried you for a short time

Unaware that you were a part of me

Never expecting a piece of you to remain

Crushing me when you went away

Mourning you quietly

Because no one understood

The pain of losing you put me through

A life cut short

Your future had so many possibilities

A cruel twist of fate

Said your life wasn’t meant to be

My second, you would have been

Just as wanted as the first and last

My arms yearned to cradle you

Singing lullabies as I gently rocked you

Even though I knew you were gone

A pain I’ve held close to my heart

As I imagine what you would be today

To fill my arms

I planted a rose in your memory

Cultivated tenderly

Bringing me joy and peace

I needed when my heart was torn

So, twenty-two years later

I’m still planting flowers

Adding color to my life

Which was taken from me

The day I lost you

Come near, sit a spell, and listen to tales of old as I sit and rock by my fire. I'll serve you some cocoa and cookies as I tell you of the time long gone by when your Greats-greats once lived.
