Eating Cheese While Rome Burns.
A poem about poverty in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s. Political and social commentary poem.
More cottage cheese, oh yes please
Three ducks on walls sing out of key
Rain in summer heat on concrete homes
Ivory towers invade living room TVs
Rearrange deckchairs, yes we must!
Manipulate the class wars, ya gotta look down ya beak
At another poor, tired, jobseeker sitting in the street
The times they aren't a-changing
Recession biting, no escaping
Community conflicted, divided
Unions striking, emotions raw
Inflation rampant, money tight
Tired little girl in a stained, blue dress
Drinking spoiled milk through a straw
Toffee-nosed Westminster says
"Do away with her ilk"
Ship them out, let them walk
As we hide in towers of white chalk
We'll pretend not to see the blight
Of poverty, hunger, homelessness, strife
It's all their own fault, we say behind pearly gates
We'll manipulate the class wars, determine the rates
Of who thrives and who slowly erodes
While we rearrange the deck chairs filled with our own
The bleak times are changing, but not for us all
The rain keeps on falling as some takes the fall
The TV screens flicker with empty promises
While they feast on their cottage cheese,
Oblivious, comfortable, aiming to please
Their pig iron dreams, not hear their pleas
Yes more cheese we can eat
As we croon our off-key ode to the elite!
