Eat with Patience
A poem about staying in the moment
I sat at my desk eating oatmeal this morning,
a mindless activity to pass the time,
shoving spoonful after spoonful of food into my mouth.
——
I sat there, staring softly at the white blank wall,
pondering today's decisions and how they might change everything –
or nothing at all.
——
My window was open to let the cool breeze in,
and my favorite song was cheerfully tweeted and whistled
by the birds dancing just beyond the porch.
——
I noticed none of it, my mind was busy, as one continuous thought ran
along the curves of my brain, faster and faster,
but not desperate to reach an end.
——
I held up my container of oatmeal and saw it was half way eaten,
and my stomach gurgled loudly like an alarm clock
the second time it goes off.
——
I brought the next spoonful of oatmeal to my mouth
and told myself there is no reason to rush –
there is nowhere you need to be.
So I ate slowly, with careful and considerate bites –
I felt the blueberries pop and the chia seeds crunch;
I tasted the woody cinnamon and the subtly sweet almond –
I heard the birds full chirping and the quiet water flowing nearby;
And I remembered the simple joys of eating oatmeal every morning.
——
I sat at my desk, breathing slowly,
reminding myself to stay mindfully aware of all the delicious details
life has interwoven around me.
