Earth Tones

A mother's favorite colors

By Robyn ReischPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

My eyes reflect blue;

Something I did not pass down

Theirs look cocoa brown.

Plaid school uniforms,

Navy stained with royal ink

Smarter blues, I think.

Rich earth brown eyed kids;

Oceans shape the continents;

But not their content.

I see sister blues;

Theirs look brighter; glitter, shine,

Livelier than mine.

Cyan pool water -

Frothing waves, a startling splash.

Mine lie still as ash.

Cloudy blue-green globes;

Brown earth stares back at bedtime -

The loveliest rhymme.

Today we wore red.

We fooled them all; blood and flames.

We played all their games.

So now we've been spent.

Float in blue without a sound.

Drink up cocao brown.
