Drowning

I am drowning.

I flail my arms in silence.

I gasp for breath in dark rooms.

I find solace in solitude.

A lie that I use as a mantra.

But a permanent smile is plastered

On this mask that I carefully painted and bejewelled

With expensive gems and fake diamonds.

Their glitter hides the darkness

That is lurking within.

Years of curation.

Years of perfection.

Damned I'd be

If the walls start breaking.

If the paint begins melting.

If this glass house starts cracking.

Plaster it with new positive affirmations.

Take new medications.

Find new fixations.

Anything but to acknowledge

The growing depression

That is fighting against suppression.

I'm used to suffocation.

I'm weary of affection.

Addicted to asphyxiation.

Faked determination.

Find new ways to inspire motivation.

Losing identity.

Finding it again.

Only to bury it again

Under everyone else's ridiculous expectations!

Lost in the chaos of society.

The noise that never ceases.

The ringing in the ears

Warning me to stop.

Nauseated by my choices.

Going against my intuition.

A strong desire to prove oneself

To people who do exactly the same!

Oh Dear Lord,

We are all drowning!

We tell ourselves to keep swimming.

To keep praying.

To keep believing.

To keep moving.

We flail our arms in the air.

Gasping for breath in silence.

Fearing the day when we must

Face our own shadows

And the harsh reality

That is hidden behind

A false promise of serenity.

So, we suppress our depression

With brand new fixations.

Pull our attention away

And let's renew our subscription

Like an overused prescription

To a carefully curated distraction.

This poem speaks of the possible effects of the burnout culture and the capitalism that we are all forcefully subscribed to. Many of us have faced it and some of you, probably experience it every day.

I also know that I am just a stranger on the internet, but please take care of your mental health. Take breaks and don't let your worth be based on someone else's standards.
