Dreams

and doubt

The smell of freshly cut grass hung in the air, as the leaves crunched under her feet.

The smell reminded her of simpler times. Times when her dreams seemed so big and fantastical, and also just that, dreams.

As she walked, music in her ears, she thought of new dreams. Thoughts of him floated into her head. How attached to him she had become, and how that scared her.

She pictured what her life would be like moving forward with him, laughter, love, adventure and happiness. She smiled as she pictured it, falling asleep in his arms every night, not just when they both weren't busy. Waking up and making him lunch for work with little notes in it. Not having to wonder when she would get to see him again, when his schedule would be opened to make time for her. Instead, she would know that even busy, they would see one another, kiss one another every day.

Her smile faded as she began to wonder if he even wanted that, if he ever pictured her in his future. Old wounds she had worked hard to heal began to fester, bringing doubt and fear into her thoughts.

As if the world felt her pain, the smell of grass faded, and the sky turned gray with thick clouds. A sort of heaviness around her. She looked down at the shredded leaves beneath her feet and wondered if that was her fate. She hoped not.

She wondered if her dreams would always be just that, dreams. Shoving the doubt deep down she looked to the sky and whispered, "I know not what the future holds, but I know for me, I will enjoy every minute I have with him. Those minutes I do not, I will make the best of my life. Whatever will be, will be."
