Darkness Falls

Depression is something everyone goes through...But it comes in all shapes and sizes.

By Brooklyn HartPublished 7 years ago 1 min read

Listen—Do you hear that? That's the sound of silence as it enfolds the body of the person I used to be. Darkness overcame me and I welcomed it with open arms. I didn't use to be depressed.. No one is born depressed.

Depression comes to you when you aren't expecting a guest. It encases you and turns your body into its living room. You're a shadow of the person you once were—You are no longer capable of feeling a smile creep on your face that doesn't feel forced. You're no longer capable of laughing because your throat is like a piano, in which case your vocal chords, are the out of tune keys.

You have become an enclosed body, that you never asked to be silenced. No one asks for depression. No one asks to have the thoughts, of how they can make it so they are no longer breathing—Forcing a smile—Playing the out of tune keys, that used to be vocal chords.. No one asks to not be heard.

But do you hear that? The fast beating heart hiding within that darkness? Can you see them? Hiding within their darkness? Your darkness. My darkness.. Our darkness. Sometimes we can mistake our darkness for the life that we were given.

We become deceived so much that our vision becomes blurred so we can’t see everything good that stands before us. We are no longer entitled to the opinion that used to be at the tips of our tongues. We are no longer entitled to our bodies or our lives like we used to be.

Depression perceives itself in the shape of a person just as well as it does in the shape of a coffin. Or maybe your depression was caused by something else.. Maybe your vision was blurred before your tongue was pulled from your mouth that used to hold so much meaning.. You—Used to hold so much meaning.
