The rain poured
Drenching earth,
Creating puddles
Then raging rivers
That fled down roads
And through pastures,
Cleansing the damage
Our fires caused,
Removing ash and soot
To give room for new roots
New blooms,
That we would pick
And dawdle over
On our brilliant days,
Where the sun would shine
And a calm wind,
Would kiss our skin-
We knew it wouldn’t be long
Before clouds and shade
Squeezed in-
But they brought
The rains we yearned for
And called for
In our sleep-
An end to our drought
And our endless dust,
A revival of memories
And a nurturing caress
That we hadn’t seen
In too long.
We learned to dance in the currents,
Creating our own waves
From Nature’s gifts.
