CRASHING WITH THE WAVES

CRASHING WITH THE WAVES

Absentmindedly eyeballing the enormous waves thrusting against the arrays of black rocks below the mountain edge, he was one with the waves. Out of his control, his situation jostled him all over the place. He had no idea which way he should go. He was at the mercy of life and time.

Trailing his eyes over the uneven rough edges of the sharp rocks, cut by mother nature herself, he found beauty in this deadly object. Slowly huffing out and taking in the salty air surrounding him, water droplets from the crashing waves hitting him, sticking to his clothes and bare arms, he mentality leaned against the soft wind caressing his body. Foam from the breaking swell collecting in the small craters within the rocks, nature was showing him the reality of life. With enough outside force, like the vengeful waves, even the strongest of all, like the huge and rugged rocks, couldn't win. Little by little, the ocean was claiming the rocks.

It may take time — centuries even — but the billowing will eventually break through the stone's barrier.

Plumping down on the half-dry and half-moist brownish-green grass, he didn't have to try hard to ignore the uncomfortableness underneath him. His mind was already too preoccupied with the decision he would soon have to make to be fussy about the grass going through his pantsuit and poking his bum.

Taking in the environment around him, engulfed in the silence and relaxing in the emptiness that this sad yet beautiful moment provided, he watched the sun set behind the horizon. Exhaling, he wished for time to stop. But he knew he was only stalling. He needed to man up and make a final decision, no matter how hard it was.

The choice was simple; Yes or no.

But the weight that either choice carried was enough to suffocate him.

Never one to be so out of control, he ruffled his comb-over green-coloured hair in exasperation. He was a self-made man. He should be more proud of himself. But ever since he met the heiress of this island, he was more than aware of his lacking. He was not as rich as the father of the heiress desired. In the father's eyes, he was worthless. And no matter how much the heiress and he loved each other, they were both at the mercy of time.

Glancing back at the rocks, he remembered how last night the heiress pointed at those rocks from her room's window and explained how their love was as strong as those rocks taking a beating from the unforgiving swell. But were they really that strong? Sitting here, as darkness engulfed him in its pit, he begged to differ.

Their love might be as strong as those tall and sturdy rocks right now, but with time, everything changes; particularly when faced with a worthy adversary. And in their situation, the heiress' father was most definitely the first worthy adversary they will have to face.

Laying down in the darkness of the night, the crashing waves soothing to his ears, the chilly air rising from the ocean, and increasing each time the waves broke against the rocks, he crossed his arms behind his head and looked up at the stars. Their love was strong, he had no doubt about that. But she was also accustomed to a wealthy life. A life that would take him years to be able to give her. Closing his eyes, becoming one with nature, he knew that's where the main problem arose.
