Conductive

It’s usually accidental

when you discover

you’re still conductive.

Bite foil

with a silver filling

and

ZZZT

or

it can be curiosity

like pressing your tongue

on the two little nipples

of a 9-volt battery

ZZZT

and you jerk

like the universe betrayed you

and not your own stupidity

which is measured in tiny volts.

ZZZT

Your tongue flinches.

Your whole body says “Stop!”

And yet we spend our lives

touching things that are charged.

People.

Memories.

Old wires we thought we’d safely buried.

ZZZT

Sometimes it’s that song we play on repeat.

Sometimes it’s a name appearing on a screen.

Always—it’s love—the worst conductor.

You think you’re chewing something harmless.

You think you can avoid the fillings

then

ZZZT

Your body quivers.

Your eyes water.

And somewhere beneath your skin,

beneath the years and careful insulation

something sparks.

You’re still connected.

When I read John's poem Crackle Crackle it reminded me of accidentally biting foil when I had silver fillings, which then reminded me of licking a 9-volt battery, which I enjoy.
