i do community service
for all the boys
looking for their wives
while they find them
and listen to them moan.
maybe then
the father who
made me
(not the ones i call daddy)
will think i am not
useless.
i know i am
delusional
but not entirely
because i know.
i get bored too fast
fall in love too fast
and i don’t want kids.
my life looks like
the exact opposite
of my mother’s dreams.
i speak my mind
and i am not sorry.
i have been
too many places
and known too many people
and i still don’t
know me.
(just that
i can make
men happy)
and that
maybe i will never know
but i will never stop
wanting to.

I First Saw Him
When I first saw him sitting on the wall, relaxed and looking out over the water, I was sure he wasn't a local. Not including children, there are only about 250 or 300 of us in this area full-time, though that number is ten-fold in the summer, and I know everyone at least by sight or by family resemblance. And yet, the way he sat looked familiar and started my mind sorting and discarding among the families I knew, not quite like this one, not quite like that one.
