The Green Witch

I surround myself with nature in every form, clothing my soul in the seasonal changes of this land around me. Immersing myself and insulating against the discordant buzz of humanity.

Autumnal now with bronzes, reds and yellows rich and vibrant. My coat is threaded with coppers, rusts and gleaming golds.

Richness untold.

I can feel the trees drawing back in the nutrients so that they can store them for the next growth season, leaving behind any wastes to be discarded and fall to the ground and be repurposed over and over. Nothing lost, much gained by this cycle of life and death.

Autumn, that last hoorah of blazing colours before the more muted tones of browns and greys.

Brilliant cerulean skies frame the blaze of leaves, speaking to my soul of life in its final burst of fervour before decline into the long sleep.

Gentle sunshine and welcome rains to sooth parched brown soils from summers heat.

The Hydrangea are quieter now in colours, faded blues and maroons where once they were brilliant magentas and sky blues.

Winter is coming, the crispy white frosts coating every surface.

Azure skies one day then purple blacks the next as storms and snow roll through,

glittering blankets that snug us down and muffle all sounds…shhh sleeping now.

Quiet tones, gentle tints and shades.

The little death, before spring wakes the sleeping forms and bursts slowly into life once more.

Buds of viridescent unfurl, darkening to emeralds, limes, sages and olive greens.

Tender shoots push through the warming soils towards the light, drawing on the stores laid down by autumns leaves.

We stretch and venture forth, stray away from our warm fires and cosy nests.

Plunge our hands back into the earth and bring forth new life with our plantings and chase the light in our hurry to keep up with the quickening earth.

Yellows, reds, pinks and Oranges of daffodils, ranunculus and poppy.

Too soon the days are long and hot, full leafed and abundant with jewel like hues of emeralds, malachite and rare green beryl.

The flowers burst forth in a rainbow splendour, raucous and loud.

Magentas and violet, the rare true blues of Salvia, delphiniums and cornflowers.

Yellows and Oranges of Day Lilly, hibiscus and viola.

The colour wheel of life, spinning from primaries to secondaries then tertiary.

Hue, value and intensity in a parade of form.

Another year passes with the cycle of life. Births and deaths, sorrows and joys.

Every colour giving meanings to the passing of time.
