Colouring The Numbers
On Making New Friends and Talking Poetry
This is my first attempt at an ode, which often chooses love or admiration of or for the subject. After meeting a new Vocal friend we talked poetry and the sonnets and villanelles I had written for a number of friends, but I had never tried an ode and said I would try to do one for her.
It’s a vaguely Pindaric ode, with three quatrains and a short fourth line. I hope this works so any constructive criticism is welcome. The music is “Walt Whitman’s Niece” and an unpublished Woodie Guthrie song brought to life by Billy Bragg and Wilco.

Stumbling together across a wide sea
We talked of this and that and where we were
We then fell into to talking poetry
And some words we shared.

Culture Club Colour By Numbers came up
And Jah Wobble’s Odds Sods and Epilogues
With Words We Both Loved, Now There Is The Rub
The Text became Talk.

She gave me Direction in her poem
Read to me as she showed me her journal
Sharing words how we create our bright sun
Creating Normal.
