A dedication to my friend killed in Iraq in 2005

Tears fell from heaven

The day that you died

Life and death

I got one

You got the other

Your body was shredded

I never saw you

Nine pieces of shrapnel

It’s hard to write

I owe you my life

I tattooed your name

To keep you close

You died in my place

It should have been me

Paradise lost

You gave up your energy

I dishonored your memory

Years I drank

I drank till I cried

But I could not forget

You gave your life

In place of mine

Into the ether

Your soul to roam

Free from war

Your fight is done

Look upon me dear friend

For you showed me grace

See my heart

And my smiling face

Heart filled with gratitude

Peace you have found

Tethered to this Earth

Is where I remain

For the rest of my days

I will honor your name

Thank you Willy.
