The idea of fate is a topic that sparks various viewpoints. Some folks assert that fate is set in stone and cannot be altered, while others believe that we can have a say in shaping our destiny.

The “Book of Changes” advises us to actively seek good fortune and steer clear of misfortune. This suggests that our thoughts and actions can play a significant role in determining our destiny. Think of it this way: when we maintain positive thoughts, we tend to attract more good things into our lives.

Conversely, when we entertain negative thoughts, we might inadvertently decrease our chances of experiencing good fortune. Therefore, our daily actions and words have the power to influence whether our destiny takes a turn for the better or the worse.

Buddhism provides an alternative perspective, emphasizing personal agency. According to Buddhist beliefs, no external force, not even gods, holds sway over our destinies. Instead, it teaches that we are the architects of our own fate. This philosophy posits that we have the ability to transform our lives through virtuous and meritorious deeds.

Even if someone has accumulated what they perceive to be a substantial amount of negative karma (the consequences of past actions), Buddhism offers hope. It suggests that even the most severe negative karma can be mitigated, much like how adding a handful of salt to a large body of water dilutes the salty taste.

Furthermore, the quality of our lives and the depth of our wisdom depend on our mindset. A broad and selfless perspective tends to yield greater blessings and wisdom, while a selfish outlook may result in shallower wisdom and fewer blessings.

Repentance is considered a potent means of purifying one’s karma, increasing blessings, and wisdom, and changing one’s destiny. Just as we clean dirty clothes with clean water or wash our bodies to rid them of impurities, our hearts can be cleansed through acts of repentance in Buddhism.

A saying goes, “The harder you work, the bigger half you have in your hands, and the richer you get.” This underscores the idea that human destiny is influenced by both effort and the laws of cause and effect.

The overall message is that, while fixed karma from past lives cannot be altered, everyone has the potential to shape their present destiny. One’s life can be transformed through their own actions and choices, in alignment with the law of karma.

The universe provides life as a training ground for personal growth, and by mastering their emotions and adapting their mindset, individuals can navigate the challenges of life and shape their own destinies. Ultimately, it’s the interplay of human relationships, the law of cause and effect, and personal choices that define one’s path in life.
