Labour Day, also known as International Workers' Day, is a public holiday celebrated on the first of May each year. It commemorates the historic struggle for better working conditions and workers' rights that took place in the late 19th century.

The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to the labour movement in the United States in the 19th century. The working conditions in the factories and industries during this period were extremely poor, with long working hours, low pay, and dangerous working conditions. Workers had little or no rights and were often subjected to exploitation by their employers.

In 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions in the United States and Canada declared that from May 1, 1886, eight hours would be the standard workday for all workers. This declaration was followed by a series of protests and strikes across the United States to demand the implementation of the eight-hour workday.

On May 1, 1886, a massive strike was called in the United States, which involved over 300,000 workers in 13,000 businesses across the country. The strike continued for several days, and the situation turned violent when a bomb was thrown during a peaceful protest in Haymarket Square, Chicago, on May 4, 1886. This event led to the death of several people, including police officers and protesters.

The events of May 1 and the Haymarket Square Riot marked a turning point in the struggle for workers' rights and better working conditions. In 1889, the International Socialist Conference declared May 1st as International Workers' Day in memory of the events that took place in the United States.

Today, Labour Day is celebrated in many countries around the world as a public holiday, and it is an opportunity to honor the contribution of workers to society and to raise awareness of the ongoing struggles for better working conditions and workers' rights.
