This poem was written for Memorial Day. It represents what the holiday means to me as both a patriot for my country, and a loving aunt to my actively serving Marine nephew. Be safe and be kind everyone!

Come celebrate with us;
I’ll bring the food if you bring the fun.
Drinking, dancing and fireworks galore!
There will be family, friends and topics to discuss
When all is said and done,
We’ll honor those who didn’t make it home from war.
A three-day weekend; it’s rare for sure.
Kids are dismissed from school,
Blistering heat for all to endure,
From the comfort of a swimming pool.
To many this day is one for relaxation,
A way to share their patriotic roots.
But to others, it’s a day to grieve the fallen,
With flowers, flags, and empty combat boots.
