Cartwheel of Colours

I went to the St. Dominic’s Fair today

On this such a dazzling day

The cerise sun was casting its ruddy glow on the AmberSky Wheel

Whilst I was looking for a personalised colour within

First, I found it in the celestial blue sky

With snow-white clouds adorning all that

Nature

Having the big boastful blast

In red, green, orange, and yellow peppers

Tempting me with its spicy flavour

Yet I turned away from it

Towards white grapes and honeydew melons

In their pale green appearance

In the white flesh

It was more my taste

But not exactly what I was here for

*

And the ruby wind whispered incantations

Mirroring the worshippers’ prayers

In the magenta circle of life

With chartreuse green woven into the scenery

*

After I stopped by the red cherry tomatoes

My favourite, so I bought them without a thought

The man behind the stand looked at me suspiciously

As if I were just an ordinary thief

Stealing the look of the limes, citrons, and lemons

With their sour green and yellow

So, in order not to confuse anyone

I bought them as well – that was my price

For looking so enviously at all that

Colours captured in the cartwheel of life

Where red is the proper queen

Of raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries

Ripen in a perfect harmony

With Phoenician purple of blackberries, blueberries, and grapes

Grown in the garden’s shade

For more than seven centuries

*

And the ruby wind whispered incantations

Mirroring the worshippers’ prayers

In the magenta circle of life

With chartreuse green woven into the scenery

*

Finally, I got to the point

Where I could profitably use my skills

To choose an artistic metalwork

Along with the stained glass chandeliers

Amber, felt, glass, leather, shell, and silver jewellery

Kashubian ceramics, Czech glassware, Oriental furs and carpets

English fabrics, Gypsy pottery, and Gdańsk vodka

And even some kind of strange pyramid trinket

With an emerald green insect seized in amber

Followed by the sepia photographs

Snatching the moments of time

From the market with fish, wood, coal, hay, and smell

Of the Toruń gingerbread

Along with grilled sausages and dumplings

Country bread with lard and pickled cucumber

Savoured with the sauerkraut stew, beer, and shashlik

*

And the ruby wind whispered incantations

Mirroring the worshippers’ prayers

In the magenta circle of life

With chartreuse green woven into the scenery

*

There was always an artistic culture left for last

Hidden behind the tall walls and waiting for its turn

In the dark ages of the society

Having little in common with it

Whilst history served it hard

With a sabre, homicide, and maraud

Later laughed up their sleeves

With acrobats and jugglers, circus and theatre performers

With the courteous addition of world-renowned painters

Kossak, Witkacy, Matejko, Boznańska

Podkowiński, Pruszkowski, and Wyspiański

All united together true masters of colour

Daring to mix and match smoked sienna and ultramarine

Paris blue, cyan, and light ochre

For a flawless representation of the enclosing world

Slowly dissolving into the darkness of history

*

And the ruby wind whispered incantations

Mirroring the worshippers’ prayers

In the magenta circle of life

With chartreuse green woven into the scenery

*
