Burnout.

I thought I was immune.

When adults described it to me back then,

I could not see myself

Falling into the same pattern.

Burnout.

I thought I was invincible.

I ride through my mania,

I sought adrenaline,

I chased off sleep―

Seeking the type of high

In my day to day's glory.

I chased victories

And let myself succumb to it like an addiction.

Letting it turn into an incurable affliction,

Fueling my unachievable ambitions,

And turning away genuine affection

From people who really cared

As I numb myself with medication.

Burnout.

Such a funny term.

I know what it is like.

I know what it does.

But I crave it nonetheless

Because I base my worth

On societal standards

That would surely never matter

When I'm six feet under.

This poem speaks of the possible effects of the burnout culture. Many of us have faced it and some of you, probably experience it every day. I know that I am just a stranger on the internet, but please take care of your mental health.

Take breaks and don't let your worth be based on someone else's standards.
