Back to the Mountain
The 19th story in ‘Divine Revelation’.
Today, we are travelling to the mountain. My little sister sits in the front seat. I’m in the back.
The last time I travelled to the mountain, I sat in the back seat, shouting directions to a redheaded girl as she rolled paper between calloused fingers.
The window was down, but the car filled with smoke nonetheless. Four little pieces of paper were stronger than one open window.
Golden liquor dripped from our lips as we sped up the road. I wanted to sit up on the window, to fly. The smoke filled my head and that was enough.
There’s no smoke today. There hasn’t been any for over a year. I don’t know where the redheaded girl is now.
