Aftermath

a poem

pain hurts worse in the healing

than in the crushing moment

in the heat of the battle

you either live or you die

and the aftermath is rarely shown

it always ends after the glory

we never see the next day

until caused to live through it

and so we were unaware

it had only just begun

so we stumble through the aftermath

cross the bridge before the epilogue

this bridge is long with sorrow

and built with the nails of pain

for whether you lived or died

someone fights for the healing

but this battle isn’t glorious

victory costs more than a standard

if you battled on the field

or in the depths of your soul:

pain hurts worse in the healing

than in the crushing moment
