Above Or Below

There should be neither

She cries at night into the silence of her pillows,

Another job interview refusal today,

Why? Because of the tattoos she displays,

Making her seemingly undeserving of a pay.

**

He sleeps on the sidewalk; broken,

Homeless and alone,

Why? Because he’s considered elderly,

And therefore, unworthy and unknown.

**

They hide their true nature from society,

Unable to show their true face,

Why? Because they love the wrong gender,

And therefore, don’t belong in this place.

**

He is labelled a deadbeat and dropout,

All because of the colour of his skin,

Why? Because he was born into a different culture,

Therefore, he must be totally rotten within.

**

A tiny being is laughed at and ridiculed,

What with a height in inches instead of feet,

Why? Because of a different gene inherited at birth,

They’re one of the smallest people you’ll ever meet.

**

Where are we going wrong?

Are we not all human beings regardless?

Judgement of another based on differences,

Is wrong and horribly heartless!

**

It’s shouldn’t matter if we’re different in size,

Race, colour, gender, sexuality or age,

We’re all human looking for acceptance and love,

So there’s no need for judgement or rage.

**

Each person regardless, is beautifully unique,

The very definition of imperfection perfection,

This world would be a very different place,

If we lived in love, doing away with inequality and rejection.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

    Nailed it!

  • So true! ‘ Are we not all human beings regardless? Judgement of another based on differences, Is wrong and horribly heartless!’ Life is so much more rich and interesting because of our differences ✅.

  • I agree with this 1000000%! I just wish more people understand and follow this.
