A Year In

If I knew in 2019 what I do now, I would have cherished every single moment with you.

A Year In

Had I known, I would have lingered longer with you in the rain.

Sprang for another movie, damn the price.

A double feature and we would sneak back in, twice.

Had I known then what I do now, I might be spared this pain.

We’d share every ruddy sunset, every blooming sunrise.

Every morning I’d be thankful just to look in your eyes.

There was no way of knowing how much I would lose.

No warning signs on the horizon, no hints, no hidden clues.

I replay our memories like old photographs, now.

Because we never took any real ones....How?

“I’m not photogenic,” you’d say, to get me off your back.

Now there’s nothing to hold onto and your features are fading to black.

It could just be that the whole world’s a bit darker without you.

Each day I go out for fresh air, I may walk for a mile,

And not encounter a friendly face or see a single smile.

Sometimes the despair is too much to bear, that even I will soon forget how to.

I wish I could go play all our last day in reverse,

And watch you walking back to me.

I’d take you by the hand, damn the whole universe.

Let time and all its rules cease to be.

I promise never to complain.

Just give me 2019, again.
