A Thought for the Lady

Poem for Anne Carson on the Nobel Win

Our Newest Laureate

Cowboy boots...That's what I remember

as you spoke and responded to a loud phone trill.

The interviewer was struck numb with rage;

you brought us your wisdom beyond the page:

'It is the music of our age.'

I looked at your feet as you sat there,

the red and the symbols of the midwest legends

rested at your smile, the lines that spoke to us,

the poise that did not raise a fuss.

A legend was on our stage.

Autographs? Yes...how could I resist?

All that space, and you only wrote -

in fine blue-angled ink ten year ago:

'Respectfully...AR' I know, I know...

My thoughts are my cage.

Thank you and enjoy the wind.

They said you were listening to it

in Iceland; the news hit the digital forum.

It made me proud and draw the conclusion:

We applaud what you engage.
