A Prayer in December 2023

T’was in the dark of an early winter evening when the lady prayed:

“Give me peace; and

survival for a while would be nice, I suppose--

breathe me!”

One more straw had landed,

and her bowed old camel’s back felt broken.

The Little Old Lady believed that her relationship

with God was crushing her and killing her

because she was believing, you see,

that She is a body (a one-hundred-pound gorilla)!

“A one-hundred-pound gorilla

Is sitting on my face right now!” she cried,

“called Death of the Body and of the

Personality.

oh, dear!”

She is an elder and could pass at any time.

Then friends might say,

“She did not go gently into that good night.”

Or some such thing.

Well, okay, then!

Although at first, she ranted and raved—

would it not be best

if she let that suffering—

let that agony--

GO?

What if she learned to believe,

and to feel the embrace

of the light of God

and gave in

to the joy of it?

“I am not a body.

I am free.

I am still as God created me!”
