A Farther Room

A Song for Mermaids

By D. J. ReddallPublished 5 months ago 1 min read

There will come a time when you feel as though

You have needed a drink

For years

→→→

And all of the small, familiar fonts of bliss

Will have forgotten who you are

Or grown tired of you

Again

→→→

It will become clear to you that all of your striving

Has been sufficient to keep you from starving

And spoiled your appetite

Your dental coverage is modest

And possibly lapsed

Again

→→→

Just then, if you are paying attention

The sorry tale could well become legible

As if for the first time, and rather than whine and moan

You will recall that there were many, fragile yesterdays

When reading to this point seemed too ambitious

And you will mark the book

Simply because you can

With laughter

It will become clear to you that all of your striving Has been sufficient to keep you from starving And spoiled your appetite I loved the irony here. This was hauntingly beautiful!

There's a poignancy to this, I think, D.J. that could apply to so many scenarios. I'm thinking about writing and life lessons for starters.

This piece is so good that I read it through twice in a row… lingering over the phrases of truth and pondering my life. Life itself. Compliments to you dear D.J. Compliments.
