A Fan Letter to Isaac Asimov
(January 2, 1920 to April 6, 1992)
Dear Dr. Asimov,
You lived just 72.33 years on Earth
during THE GOLDEN AGE of science fiction,
and your brain like THE CAVES OF STEEL
could clearly see the complex and make
ALL THE TROUBLES IN THE WORLD seem easier.
THE GODS THEMSELVES were in awe of you,
author of more than 500 published books.
OF MATTERS GREAT AND SMALL you were
no mere PEBBLE IN THE SKY, no PLANET THAT WASN’T.
You were, in truth, bigger than life itself.
You were one of the GIANTS, king of the COSMIC KNIGHTS,
THE BEST NEW THING since sliced bread.
You were one of the SUPERMEN explaining with such clarity
BREAKTHROUGHS IN SCIENCE. Yes, your vision was keen,
seeing as FAR AS HUMAN EYE COULD SEE.
The DEATH DEALERS took you prematurely,
and I wonder how you like your
VIEW FROM A HEIGHT beyond THE NAKE SUN.
If only we could have put your brain in the body of
I, ROBOT to live on as ROBOT DREAMS.
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
without you as our guide, with so much
of THE FUTURE IN QUESTION and
continuous CATASTROPHES!
surrounding us like NIGHTFALL.
You had your FOUNDATION on Earth,
and FROM EARTH TO HEAVEN you traveled
on THE ROAD TO INFINITY.
And now I wish you Godspeed on your FANTASTIC VOYAGE
among THE STARS, LIKE DUST.
Sincerely,
A Fan
