therapy
Pets are more than just playmates; all about pet therapy and the healing power of animals.
Jedd The Dog
"No, we're not getting a dog," I said bluntly. It wasn't because I didn't like dogs, I loved them, but as an eighteen year old, full-time student in his first rental home, getting a dog was not exactly a convenient choice. There was no way I was losing my bond money over soiled carpet and a dug-up yard. Emily, one of my three housemates, however, had other plans.

My Dark Angel
People hear it all the time, Dogs are mans best friend. For some people, this is true - for others it is not. I happen to be one of those people who believe you can have a deep connection with any animal, but that animal has to be special. What I mean is, anyone can own a dog and say, my dog is the best and helps me when I feel sad, but will your dog be able to help someone who is clinically depressed? Could your dog tap into that other-worldly darkness people feel every day and be able to bring them out of it, or would your dog spaz out and jump all over them making them feel worse than before?

Animals Can Heal
In the United States, pets are extremely loved. According to a 2015 poll, 95 percent of owners consider their pet to be a part of the family. About half of the owners buy their pet birthday presents. I am a part of that statistic and gave my dog a birthday and Christmas present before she passed.

ANIMALS I HAVE KNOWN
FROM MY CHILDHOOD I WAS A LONELY CHILD AND MY PLAYMATES WERE NOT ALWAYS HUMAN. AT 4 YEARS OLD, I BEGAN COLLECTING JUNE BUGS. HOW I LOVED MY LITTLE FRIENDS. I GATHERED THEM, AS MANY AS I COULD AND SAVED THEM ON OUR PORCH SCREENS. THE HOUSEKEEPER FRIEND THAT TOOK CARE OF ME, MY SISTER, AND MY BROTHER DECIDED THEY WERE JUST BUGS. SHE DID NOT KNOW THEY WERE MY FRIENDS AND THREW THEM ALL OUT. SHE SOON LEARNED A FOUR-YEAR-OLDS TEMPER WAS NOTHING TO BE RECKONED WITH.

Can pets help your mental health?
When it comes to talking about mental health it's a delicate topic, but now people are more open to expressing their feelings - especially online. There are always different ways to help create a positive environment that will help our mental health wellbeing, but sometimes we cannot control things that can cause damage to our environment.

From Grief to Life
My family is no strangers to pets. We’ve had everything from cats to bunnies to a truly spectacular number of fish. We’ve adopted our pets from stores and shelters, they’ve been store raised and strays. However, this story isn’t about them. This story is about my pet, my precious little kitten and how he came into my life. This story started on January 6, 2015, the worst moment of my life, the day my brother died. We were born only 16 months apart and he was the most important person in my life. He was always there to encourage me, make me smile and had always been by my side. So, you can imagine that losing him was more than heartbreaking and that after I did, I found that I was pretty lonely. My other siblings were many years older than me and not living at home, so we hadn’t been very close at the time. So, to help ease my loneliness I asked my parents if I could get a pet. A therapy pet to help me through my grief, to support me and give me a whole new reason to smile.

Lost and Found
I think to say that my life has been a roller coaster is an unfair analogy. I like roller coasters, they’re fun. The ups and downs that have been most of my adult life were not fun. Let’s just say that my life did not go the direction I thought it would. I started down a nice country lane that somehow threw me into a roundabout that I couldn’t get off of. Once I escaped the roundabout, I found myself on a six-lane highway with no clue of which exit I needed to take. I was lost.

The War Hero's Cat
The story I’m about to tell is not mine. But rather my husbands’ who is a proud and quiet man. I don’t mean quiet in the literal sense. He’s one of the few people I know who can wax lyrical at the drop of a hat and has an anecdote for every for every situation. I mean quiet about himself personally. To really know the man is rare, and it’s a gift. To know what makes him tick, his passions, desires, dislikes. He’s the kind of guy everyone and no one is friends with.

Service dogs part 2
The community of service dogs started quite small but expanded over the last few years. I would say it started when people truly noticed the benefit of animals towards certain type of people. We always see how much your quality of life drastically changes when you have an animal. Their instincts are so strong they can sense when you're not feeling well right away. There are so many types of service dogs nowadays but still, not everyone can have them.
