Start With the Basics

Before you get into how to train your dog, you may want to start with the basics of what dogs are, what different breeds are, and what makes a dog tick. Doing so will help you understand your dog better, which will make it easier to train them. Plus, you’ll get more out of your training sessions because you’ll know how to approach your dog and which techniques will work best for them. If you’re not sure where to start, the Humane Society has a great guide to different breeds and their characteristics. This will help you understand what makes your dog tick and how you can best approach training them.

Reinforcing behaviors You Want to Encourage

When you’re training your dog, it’s important to remember that you want to focus on reinforcing the behaviors you want and discouraging or ignoring the ones you don’t. This means you’ll need to pay close attention to your dog and try to identify the behaviors they’re doing. Once you’ve figured out what they’re doing, you can either reward them for it or ignore them for doing something wrong. The best way to go about this is to keep a record of your dog’s progress and stay organized throughout the process. If you keep track of what your dog is doing, you’ll have a better idea of what they’re good at and what they need more help with. It can also help you figure out what you’re doing right and what you could do better when it comes to training your dog.

Use Food Rewards

Rewarding your dog with treats is a great way to reinforce good behavior, but you should only do so after your dog has finished the behavior you wanted. This means you don’t want to give your dog a treat before they’ve finished the trick or behavior you wanted them to do. This works because your dog will associate their treat with the behavior they just performed and want to do it again. It’s important to note that you can’t use food rewards for everything, though. If you use treats for everything, your dog will become dependent on them and not learn how to behave without them. Keep in mind that you don’t want to use the same treat for everything. Instead, you want to use treats as rewards for behaviors you want to reinforce. This means you should give your dog a treat after they’ve followed your command or performed a trick correctly.

Don’t Forget the Dominance Game

While we’ve talked a lot about rewarding good behavior and ignoring bad behavior, you also won’t want to forget about the dominance game. A lot of dog owners and trainers have a misconception that the dominance game is about being mean to your dog or being aggressive toward them. This is untrue. The dominance game is all about being the leader of your pack and asserting yourself as the top dog in the house. You don’t have to be aggressive towards your dog to do this, though. In fact, an important part of the dominance game is showing your dog that you’re in control and that they can rely on you. There are different ways you can do this, but the most important thing to remember is that it’s all about communication and being consistent.

The Conclusion

Training your dog isn’t something that happens overnight. It can take a lot of time and effort to get your dog where you want them to be. The most important thing to remember is that you can’t expect to train your dog in a day or even a week. It’s an ongoing process and something that you’ll have to keep working on over time.
