Dogs and cats in particular are either highly independent or highly reliant on our affection and care for them. How long can you responsibly leave your pet alone? Either they truly know how to manage themselves with lots of oversights (*cough* cats) or they certainly don't (*cough* dogs). What impact does that solitude have on their wellbeing and health? Those of us at Fetch! These are some excellent questions that Pet Care got fantastic responses to!

Dogs are actually quite social animals, despite the common misconception that they are very reclusive. Some dog owners even claim that their cats express sadness when they leave. Before leaving your pets alone for an extended period of time, it's important to understand their routines and behaviours because they develop strong emotional attachments with both their human and pet partners.

Dogs, on the other hand, have a reputation for acting out when they're left alone because they love drama. They appear to experience everlasting frustration in every moment of solitude. But if they're prepared for success, they can spend some time by themselves and amuse themselves. They find it simpler to handle such times of separation with the aid of toys, food, and cosy spaces.

You'll find some advice from our owners and pet sitters about how to prepare your animals for success during times of solitude, as well as the recommended amount of time for each animal, below.

While you could be correct, there are steps you can do to stop worse problems from developing. We frequently overlook the fact that mental enrichment for dogs may be just as demanding and productive as physical training! Additionally, mental growth can take place even while you are not around.

We all know that dogs require more interaction than some of the other pets in our lives, need to go outside more frequently, and need food and drink more frequently. They also have a propensity to get into things if left alone for an extended period of time. It's crucial to understand your pets' habits as a result. How frequently do they use the restroom regularly? Do you have regular eating and sleeping hours? Have they experienced any “episodes of destruction” in the past while you were out or at work? These are important things to remember…

Here are a few great tips you can live by!

1. 1. When you're at work or out running errands, how long does your dog normally "hold it" before going? That could serve as a useful barometer for determining if you should hire someone or keep your travel time to a minimum.

2. 2. Age of your dog should also be taken into account; if it's a puppy, it definitely shouldn't be left alone for more than a few hours. However, an elderly dog with a schedule may be resting while you're hard at work.

3. Make sure they are comfortable. Having enrichment toys or other alone time can actually help divert a pet while you are away. Even heads of lettuce can be a fun exercise for children that isn't too damaging and only takes minor cleanup: tape/staple free cardboard boxes. Hey, it's better than destroying the couch, right?

4. Having said that, our experts advise limiting your pups' alone time to no more than 6 hours every day in order to keep them happy and healthy.

It will be much easier for both you and your dogs if you keep in mind that they are social beings who need instruction and regular connection. And there's never a terrible moment to have a reliable, experienced, and highly trained pet sitter on call for any last-minute emergencies! To ensure you feel like the best pet parent around, our teams of bonded, insured, and safety-certified employees would be pleased to help you navigate these kinds of questions.
