Why being sick can be beautiful

and why it helps

By Wolfbase Published about a year ago • 3 min read

Our lives have always been a tough pill to swallow.

Why work when we know we are going to die?

Why even try when, over a thousand years, nothing will even matter?

I could sit here and keep debating and arguing for over a century, and we both wouldn't come to a proper conclusion.

The easiest way to just check if your life is worth living would be by getting sick.

Sounds crazy, and it is.

Being sick is, in a way, suspending your life. You're the one who's on a break, and suddenly you don't want to be sick again.

Now, some might argue, "I don't want to be sick because I can't enjoy life, and if I'm not sick, I gotta work a job I hate."

That's a valid argument, and yet when you're sick, your head fills up with all kinds of plans you could be doing, doesn't it?

Don't you feel like going out in the wind, but know you can't because your lungs will probably burst from the coughing?

Now, I do agree this isn't the best way to be grateful, but being sick does show us how non-black-and-white our life is.

It lets you reflect on what you have and what you could have.

I'm sure social media has already sped up our lives considerably by giving us new aspirations, content, goals. One thing social media doesn't give us, though, is space—

The space to think, to ideate, to wonder. Humanity was built by this space, so why do we avoid this space?

Even when our body literally takes a break (by being sick), we still race forward in our minds, not even enjoying the temporary space given to us by life itself.

We all need space—from family, time, work, hell, even life itself. While you can make that space by clear communication and planning (let's be honest, no one's that blessed), you still do get space from all that when you get sick.

When you think about it, it's just your body being unable to keep up with life in general. In conclusion... when you're sick, your body needs space.

So why not enjoy the peace you naturally get? Why not forget the future and the past when we get sick? The world's greatest ideas came when a person was idle, sick—in essence, when they had space.

While it is hard to really come up with a ground-breaking idea when you're struggling to even breathe, it is still an opportunity to distract yourself (in a healthier way) without external sources.

Who knows, maybe at the end of your break, you might just have a casual appreciation for life, or you might have the cure for cancer. One thing is certain though—

It'll be better than complaining about the flu.

Now I think it's important to mention this trick isn't applicable in serious cases (please do get help if you're critical), but being grateful can be fun.

After all, being sick is just another opportunity to experience life on pause. Even in the most annoying moments, life might just surprise you with an unexpected dose of fun.

So if you ever feel like you need a break, and also feel a cold on the way, just brace for impact. For who knows—maybe this will be your time to shine? (Or at least get an appreciation for the little things you had.)

So why not just get some space—or hell, make some space? Next time, when you know your nose isn't gonna cooperate, just rest...

Enjoy the newfound space, for that might just make you love life even more.

(Though I think I should say this—don't go out of your way to get sick, please.)
