Stop dragging your feet on learning a necessary skill. How can you expect people to believe what you have to say if you don’t know how to say the words?

Once you start writing and doing the work, you’ll find that it’s much easier than it seems. It doesn’t matter if you think you’re not a good writer or if you’re not ready to write a book. The only way to get better at anything is by doing it.

You don’t need any fancy qualifications or equipment. No matter your age, experience level, or education — everyone can become a writer if they put their mind to it.

Whether you’re starting your first novel or have a few great ideas for short stories, set down what comes to mind. Put it on paper, in an email, or on an app. You have all the time in the world — so why not start now?

You can’t fake being a good writer

Every time I read a piece from The Atlantic, I have come to expect excellent writing. You can’t fake words with that publication. If you want to be a good writer, read the material there.

I believe if you want to be a writer, you have to write. You can't just sit and wish it will happen, you have to do the work. Write something, anything. It might not be perfect, but it's a start!

Being a writer isn’t easy. It requires discipline and effort. Most of all, it requires you to be able to make sacrifices. But if you want to do this — if you want to write — then you need to stop making excuses for yourself and just get down to work.

Set aside time each day for writing. Schedule your writing time on your calendar, as you would any other appointment or meeting. If you don’t do this, there’ll always be something else that takes precedence over what’s important. When people say they’re too busy to write, tell them that if they want to be a writer, they’ll find the time.

Step on the pedal

If you’re passionate about writing and you do not see results fast enough, just remember that you can’t go further unless you step on the pedal.

If you want to be a professional writer, you have the power to make this happen. Becoming a successful writer won’t happen without clear intention, motivation, and commitment.

If you have a book or short story in you, don’t wait another day to start writing. Writing is a journey, not a destination. You’ve got to keep on the course — no matter what obstacles lie ahead.

When writing for others (your audience), be genuine with who you are — even if you’re an introvert. Using real words and stories will help your audience connect to what you say, and build trust. When you write from the heart, your message is stronger.

Writing is something that I definitely value, but writing well is also a priority. When you write to connect with an audience and make them feel something, it’s a powerful thing.

Writing is a vital skill that we need in our everyday lives. And, since it’s such an important part of our lives, it’s important that we learn how to do it the right way. Creating content that resonates with an audience is a must — it creates a connection, which can drive them to share and engage with your website or social media.

Writing is a skill that takes years to master. While you should, of course, try to make all of your writing as good as possible, it’s more important to keep doing it, even if no one ever reads it. If you devote some time every day or week to writing, your skills will improve faster. And when you go back and read something you wrote a month or so ago, don’t be ashamed to say, “This is really good,” especially if it is.

Writing has to be a priority. When you write, stop using filler words like “very” and “really.” Try to avoid them as much as possible. Any word that isn’t necessary, take it out, like the word, “that.”

Writing in a conversational tone is essential for a compelling read. Also, watch out for passive language! Active language (verbs) elicits stronger reactions from readers and makes your content more engaging.

Don’t allow yourself to get interrupted

If you want to write well, you have to keep at it. Writing is hard work. When you’re writing, don’t get distracted or allow yourself to get interrupted.

Writing is my priority. When I write, I create content and make things happen. I don’t allow myself to get distracted at all. I write history content, and my goal has always been to cover three historic places per day.

Find your writing place. Find a place where you can focus, and no one will interrupt you. This is your time to do nothing else but write. No distractions, no interruptions, and definitely no excuses.

Find a time of day when you have no distractions. Turn off your phone, set strict time limits, and start writing!
