What will the New Year bring?

As we hustle and bustle these last few moments before the holiday exchange, many of us are writing lists of what we need to start doing once the holiday is over. Like most of us, we tend to take this week off mentally from the responsibilities and goals of our everyday existence.

What kinds of changes can we make next year?

1. Set new health goals: I know this is a yearly goal but instead of just saying it, write down 3 ways you will achieve it. For example: Renew my gym membership, find a gym/diet buddy, Stop eating sugar. Even though these may sound broad they are a start. Your goal could be as simple as “Eat less bread”. But it is a place to start.

2. Reach out to people you miss: Every year we lose people we love and when we attend wakes and funerals we swear to keep in touch. Well, make a resolution to actually do that this year. Make a list (a short one is easier to stick to) of people you love and miss that you haven’t seen in a long while. Make a plan to connect with someone at least once a month and make a plan to get together. What better way to start a new year than with new hopes of seeing people and enjoying life.

3. Don’t watch political ads or debates: The thought of 2024 makes me sweat as I know it will be a brutal Presidential election and I don’t want to hear about it. Why have people lost friendships because of political views? What have we become? Take a breath of fresh air and don’t even think about it until November.

4. Evaluate your career goals: Are you where you want to be? Do you see yourself advancing or do you just want to do something else? How do you do that? Grab a clean journal and write down all your thoughts, what you have to do and set up goals for the New Year. You can even make monthly goals to keep yourself on track.

5. Save money: Now that we are all “broke” from Christmas shopping look at new ways to save money, including limiting impulse buying. For the first month of the year, write down every single thing you buy (no matter how trivial). At the end of the month, cross off five things that you didn’t need and that you shouldn’t buy in the future. Figure out how much you will save over a month, over a year…. Wow, it sure does add up.

6. Love stronger: Think about the people in your life that truly matter and try to do things for them to brighten their days. It doesn’t have to be an expensive gift – it can be a quick call to Grandma to let her know you are thinking about her and miss her. Sometimes the simplest gesture can brighten someone’s day.

In conclusion, think about where you want to be this time next year and how much you can achieve and feel good about.

Enjoy every minute of the holidays with your family and friends. Relish the small stuff and realize that life is so short that the small stuff is the most important stuff at the end of the day. New Year equals new opportunities, new hopes, new dreams. Make the best of it all.

What are your plans this New Year? What are your goals and aspirations?
