What On Earth Are You Doing?
Or Rather: What on Earth Should You Be Doing?
Hello there!
What are you up to?
Glad you found my article which I decided to write up and post.
Even more glad that you clicked onto it and decided to read it.
What have you been up to?
“Well” you begin “I was doing....., then I was planning on doing..... ”
“On a break?” I ask,
You nod
“Of course you are, you deserve it, you’ve been so busy today, haven’t you. Haven’t you?”
“Well...” you squirm, as your nod slowly turns into shaking of your head no.
Oh dear!
We spend far too much time scrolling, on our smart phones, laptops, computers etc, instead of getting up and doing those constructive, albeit sometimes very mundane things which we know we ought to get done.
Yes, if you are on your device reading this, then you are also sat doing nothing except scrolling on here, clicking onto all sorts of possibly interesting stuff to look at or read, some of it of no relevance to us or our lives whatsoever, whereas, you may argue, some of it we never knew about, so therefore we have actually learnt from it in a very positive way.
So, here you are, now sat here, hopefully still reading this.
How long have you been scrolling on here before you found this amazing write up I posted?
2 mins, 5 mins? Half hour?
Oh my god!
As you look at the time on your device, you have been sat around for nearly an hour!
What could you have done in the amount of time you have been sat on here now, or even yesterday or the day before when you browsed?
Depending on how long it had been, depends on what you could have done in that time.
Tidy up?
Load the dishwasher?
Prepared a meal?
Cleaned the bathroom?
Mowed the lawns?
Cleaned the car?
What’s that? It’s raining? Oh dear...
What about the DIY which you’ve been intending to start, but just haven’t actually got around to it yet?
Or that really important phone call you keep putting off, not found time to do it, or just keep forgetting?
Now, if you have actually done everything which needs doing, then well done you!
So, what else can you do then?
Pick up that book you been meaning to start reading or the one you started ages ago and keep meaning to finish?
Or if you need to prepare for an interview, exam or any other studies you need to do, put away your device (unless you need it of course) and do just that.
What exactly were you doing just before stumbling across this interesting piece of writing you decided to click on and read?
Scrolling and reading other posts?
Checking emails?
Browsing on another social media site?
Researching something?
Messaging someone?
Get off!
Well after you have read and liked this of course!
“What about you?” you ask
What about me?
I know...
I’m just as bad, I’ve just spent the best part of half hour or so (ok maybe an hour) on my device, typing this, editing, saving, publishing, sharing on various social media sites, in order to hope that people like you, who are scrolling on here, will see this, click on it, read it, like it and share it.
In that time I could have
Tidied up?
Loaded the dishwasher?
Prepared a meal?
Cleaned the bathroom?
The list goes on and on and on....
Before you go, now you have come to the end of this, I hope you did enjoy reading this little weird piece which I have written about how we all seem to spend our time these days and I do hope you liked it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read. Really very appreciated!
I’m off now - I have so many things I really need to do....!
And what are you doing now?
Still scrolling away on that device of yours?
Get off! Lol

This is a brilliantly engaging and relatable piece that playfully addresses our common tendency to procrastinate on our devices. The direct, conversational tone makes it feel as though the writer is having a one-on-one chat with each reader, bringing a unique and enjoyable reading experience. Furthermore, the interspersion of rhetorical questions is incredibly effective in urging readers to reflect on their habits. Overall, I appreciate the humor and honesty wrapped up in this timely reminder to prioritize our tasks more efficiently. Well done!
So true! I was about to give a read to a couple of your other stories, but you reassured me it's better not to! I've got some serious things to do! No scrolling no more!😁
Well, I have to be here at the computer anyway, so... 😁 Good reminder!
Why am I here? Just saw you as ‘Author of the day’ in FB Vocal +’Assist!! ‘Get off! Lol’ Bahahaha Loved this!! Pauline 🌸
