What is the secret to good speech?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taylor Mali made her name overnight at a poetry competition in Chicago in 2000. Mali, who teaches a middle school in New York City, talked about how a lawyer responded to his insults towards teachers.

The lawyer said to Mali, "Those who can do a job do that job, and those who have no skills become teachers." he had asked.

Mali expressed his answer to this question in a poem. “You know what I won? I taught children that they can do much better than they think. As a note, I sometimes made them feel 60 like a medal and 90 like a slap in the face.”

Righteous Anger

Expressing in his poetry that teaching is a much more qualified profession and that his earnings cannot be measured by checks and promissory notes, Mali's speech has been watched six million times on YouTube.

Mali says that his poetry is filled with righteous indignation and that this feature is important in speech.Mali's presentation, on the other hand, gives tips on how to have a good speech, even business-related. A heartfelt speech makes a powerful impression.

For managers, presentations with PowerPoint slides at staff meetings are seen as part of their job. However, very few workplaces provide training on what to pay attention to in public speaking. That's why a dry, analytical speaking style has evolved, says Jill Avery of Harvard Business School.

For a Good Talk

Concentrate on what the audience wants to hear, not just what you want to say.

Have a skeleton of your speech, introduction, body and conclusion.

Avoid slides and other images unless they contribute to what you are saying.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Natural Approach

But public speaking is something that can be learned. Avery recommends planning the speech by focusing on what the audience wants to hear rather than what you want to say yourself. For example, he states that if you have to give bad news about the company's performance at a staff meeting, it is necessary to express not only what your superiors want you to say, but also what the staff wants to hear in order to keep morale high.

In addition, it is necessary to treat each speech as a story with introduction, development and conclusion sections. A speech should not be a speech in which some information and figures are listed, but a journey that carries the audience from one place to another.

In one of Avery's examples of good speech, the American TV show Mad Man describes how a advertiser was hired at Kodak through an emotional presentation featuring his family photos.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Attention to Images

It is very common for presenters to try to hide their bad speech by hiding behind visuals such as slides and graphics.

Avery says it's best to frame the speech well first, and to use other media only if it's needed, if it adds additional value to the presentation. “The good orators in history didn't have PowerPoint,” he says. In the images, he states that it is not necessary to refer to the text, but only to the things that will support the emphasis points of the speech

Before the actual speech, rehearsing in front of someone you know and trust helps. If you have any tic that you exhibit while speaking, you can detect and fix it at this stage.

When speaking to the masses, it can be comforting to know that not only you are afraid, but everyone is afraid.

Mali later quit teaching and started working as a speaker. He is often invited as a speaker to events organized by teachers.

“The first step to a good speech is to add the emotion it deserves,” Mali says.
