What Getting Sick Taught Me: Silence Has No Benefits

Sometimes your body breaks down to teach you what your heart was too scared to say

By sonuPublished 6 months ago • 3 min read

I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking has life just stopped here? i don't know why this happen to me .

Before I got sick, my life wasn’t super busy. From the outside, everything looked normal. I was managing work, home, all of it with a smile on my face. But inside, I was disturbed. For weeks, sleep wouldn’t come. Food had no taste. I didn’t feel like doing anything. Yet I kept going. I kept pretending I was okay, because that’s what we’re taught to do, right? Keep the smile on.

Then one day, my body gave up.

The pain started suddenly. A deep ache in my bones that I couldn’t ignore. Then came the fever high, relentless. I was burning up, but I felt cold and empty at the same time. I remember lying there, staring at the ceiling, and one thought kept hitting me: I wish someone was here. Someone who wouldn’t let me cry alone. I don’t even know who I was thinking of. Maybe my younger self. Maybe no one. But the loneliness was louder than the fever.

The doctor said bed rest. So I stayed in bed. But my mind didn’t rest. It was racing. I felt like I was losing something, or about to lose something, and I couldn’t name it. There was this constant fear . what if I don’t get back up? I would pray a lot. Not for the fever to go, but for the fear to stop. My body was still, but my brain was screaming. That’s when I realized: I was more tired in my heart than in my body.

Those days in bed changed something in me.

Rest is not a luxury, it’s a demand. I was forcing my body to run on empty for weeks. Ignoring no sleep, no appetite, no joy. My body didn’t get sick to punish me. It got sick to protect me. It forced me to stop because I wouldn’t stop on my The world moves on, even when you pause. Emails can wait. Chores can wait. The only thing that couldn’t wait was my healing. And guess what? Nothing fell apart while I was in bed. That taught me my worth isn’t tied to how much I produce. Silence has no benefits. This is the biggest one. I was disturbed for weeks but I told no one. I kept the smile on. I swallowed my words because I thought " to bear " was strength. But lying in that bed, alone, I learned: there is no benefit in staying silent. My silence didn’t make me strong. It made me sick.

So I made changes. Small, but real.

Now, if something bothers me, I say it. I don’t care if my voice shakes. I’ve learned that relaxing my mind is not selfish . it’s survival. I set boundaries. I sleep when I’m tired. I eat when I’m hungry. And most importantly, I don’t tolerate things that drain me anymore. i can't take it anymore.

If you’re reading this and you feel disturbed like I was no sleep, no appetite, smiling but sinking please listen to me. Don’t wait for your body to force you into bed. Don’t wait for the fever to teach you what I learned the hard way.

Slowing down isn’t losing. Speaking up isn’t weakness. And your peace is not negotiable. This is my personal story. I am Sonu, and this is my first step on Vocal.
