A splash of tea and drama . Top Story - November 2024.
This past year has been a real doozy. But, I try to keep on kicking, even when it’s hard to even pick myself up to start the day. My heart beats for my children: Ismael, David and Noah. My youngest son David, who was born on 2/21/2024 was diagnosed with Spina Bifida before he was born. We had to do a repair in utero (myelomeningocele) to prevent spinal cord damage and possible paralyzation, which was such an arduous, complicated process.

Life Is but a Series of Decisions. Top Story - October 2024.
I’m not an anxious person, but bouts of anxiety have been seizing my insides lately. It began in the wee hours before a heavy rainfall. By mid-morning my bedroom was flooded. I moved things off the floor and heaved my dresser onto my bed to prevent water damage, all the while madly proclaiming ‘life is happening for me and not to me’ repeatedly in my head. Fortunately, I had a lunch date. When I returned, the water had receded.

We did everything right. Or so we thought. We worked hard for decades, saved for our retirement, left behind the blizzards of the northeast, and bought a beautiful property in Florida.

Ever since my small writing beginnings, when I started writing on Vocal in February 2021, I had been in a truly terrible slump & funk when it came to my writing. I had so many unfinished projects, ideas, half finished manuscripts and first chapters that were going nowhere.

Why Just Write Is The Best Advice You Don’t Listen To. Top Story - May 2024.
Before the last 6 months, I hadn’t written anything that wasn’t for my job or university for a number of years. I wanted to write more, I used to write all the time just for fun. I used to write poems and short stories that were just for me. I used to show them to certain members of my family but it was the process of writing them that I really enjoyed.

To Give Your Last Twenty. Top Story - May 2024.
He walks oddly, shuffling and nearly tripping down the hallway toward his apartment door. I slow my pace, allowing my neighbor— a stuffy ex-marine with one missing tooth, a strong odor of liquor and two weeks' worth of unwashed stench always accompanying him—to reach his door. I crinkle my nose, nearly gagging as he dawdles ahead.

It Only Took One Minute........ Top Story - April 2024.
It only took a minute. I was sitting at the computer in my office when the phone rang. I picked up the receiver and then laid it down my desk as I went to find the student who the call was for. Within seconds I was back at my desk, ready to resume typing, when I heard the student yelling obscenities at me for listening in to his call through the handset that was still lying on the desk. Sick and tired of the lies he was spewing, I was up running down the hall, ready to kill him. By the time I reached him, I had calmed enough not to hurt him, but as I turned back towards my room, I knew that I couldn’t go on like this any longer. The decision was clear. I had to leave.
