Click HERE for PART I of this two-part series on self-help books and why I love them.

The power of a remarkable self-help book lies in its ability to explain the phenomena of everyday life in ways that readers have never considered before. What are negative emotions, exactly? What do negative emotions tell us about the lives we live? For most people, it is easier to make positive change once they understand why they currently feel steeped in negativity. Calls to action, aggressive cheerleading, and ancient mysticism are some of the typical strategies for helping people feel better; and while they’re fascinating subjects, they lack the intuitiveness to teach frustrated people how to self-soothe.

Learn what you are first, and then learn how that "beingness" operates in this reality. The answer, ironically, will be the exact same as the state of mind that you so desperately wish you could accomplish now. These five books will guide you.

The Power of Now and A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle

If anyone is just starting to question the nature of their own unease, I would first recommend this two part series from Tolle. The Power of Now reads like a guidebook to the nature of thinking, why it is so often destructive, and where the human condition of endless thinking arises from. A New Earth repeats nearly every major aspect of its predecessor, while also expanding the ideals into more interesting, universal directions. Though they are two separate works entirely, most spiritual veterans refer to them in the same breath, so I’m combining them as one entry to the list.

The bottom line: only in the present moment can you feel the true joy of living, which arises not as a thought, but as a feeling beyond thought. If you’ve never considered an overactive, compulsively thinking mind to be the cause of your troubles, then these books will revolutionize your view of reality. Once you’ve tasted a moment free of mental chatter, you’ll never go back.

The Teachings of Abraham Series by Esther and Jerry Hicks

The Hicks revolutionized the self-help world more than thirty years ago when they began teaching the Law of Attraction in a more comprehensive, digestible way than ever before. The Law of Attraction is a physical law, like gravity, that simply works in a machine-like way: whatever you put out into the universe attracts outcomes that match it vibrationally. You cannot con the Law of Attraction; it is impartial, which perfectly explains this beautiful universe and how it determines results. Any of the books in their series will help explain how the Law of Attraction can be used to your advantage, but if you want to dive directly into the most important lesson, then check out The Astonishing Power of Emotions. It will explain how your emotions work as a guidance system that steers your life toward the best outcomes. The lessons you learned about presence from Tolle will also come in handy, here, as a state of thoughtlessness will naturally elevate your emotions better than trying to pick the “perfect” thought ever could.

The bottom line: The Abraham books teach you to care how you feel more than you care about any version of negativity. If you take their teachings to heart and prioritize positive emotion above all else, your life will unfold in remarkable ways. Physical law demands it.

Power Vs. Force by Dr. David Hawkins

Dr. Hawkins brings a no nonsense attitude to self-help. His books can be hard to follow (especially the more complicated ones that deal with reality and subjectivity) and lean on vibrational energy to determine absolute truth. The Abraham series will have introduced vibrational realities to your understanding, but Hawkins will take that reality and completely explain the mysteries of the universe in terms of energy. Power Vs. Force specifically explores how we leverage the strength of the universe to our advantage. Force, as he posits, is subject to the limitations of willpower, strength, and muscle. Power, though, flows like a raging river to and through those who summon it. Force eventually exhausts itself, but power is unlimited. Learning to tap into this natural power which is available to you is the chief mission of your time on this planet.

The bottom line: once you understand the nature of power and why so few people actually know how to access it, you’ll start seeing all situations in life as an opportunity to let more power flow through. In this headspace of delicious, powerful creating, any residual thoughts of unease or depression will have a very hard time staying active in your vibration.

Reality Transurfing. Steps I-V by Vadim Zeland

I won’t ruin this genuine masterpiece of spiritualism by giving too much away. If you’ve taken my advice and have read about presence, the Law of Attraction, and power, you’re ready for what I believe is the ultimate radical journey of realization. Zeland was a Russian scientist who claims to have had a life-altering dream in which he was told how to manifest any thought into a physical reality. Millions of international copies of his dream were sold, paradoxically fulfilling his own expectations of prosperity that he wrote about in such remarkable detail. Settle in, because this book runs over 700 pages and is translated with poor, sometimes broken English. But the spirit of the work doesn’t suffer as long as you are willing to do what he demands. It all sounds so simple, so obvious, but so few people can accomplish the basic tasks he outlines over and over. Maybe you will be the exception.

The bottom line: the universe is infinite, therefore an infinite number of possible alternatives exist. To try to consider all of them while making decisions will make you go insane, and yet that is how many of us try to live our lives. The answer isn’t perfect planning, but intentionality.

The Integrity Method: Rebuild Your Identity, Create Your Fortune by T.K. Sanders

Finally, we come to my own contribution; a work which relies heavily on influence from the books I’ve already outlined, but take special care to emphasize creating an impermeable foundation on which to build your ideal life. As a Christian man raised in the church, the Jesus story influences much of how I view self-development. I tried to use parables, projections, and commonalities from the Jesus story in my own writing so that people will understand just how esoteric all of this knowledge is, really. Each one of these books eventually boils down to a single theme, which is choice. Choose the life that you want and it is yours. Choose to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and He is yours. Nothing about leaning on infinite love is scary or burdensome; it’s just humans in their warped mental head spaces who have made it so. You must be deliberate in your choices.

The bottom line: you can be, do, or have anything you want in this life; but it isn’t free. The price you pay is your outlook and your attitude. It’s time to sacrifice your ego on the altar of perfect, unconditional love. All that you have to lose is your depressed, anxious “Self.”
