The Unbreakable Will
How the Spirit to Preserve ShapesOur Destiny

Friends often ask why I prefer photographing wildflowers rather than other subjects; to me, these plants possess a unique beauty—one that shines through in both their appearance and their spirit. Though seemingly fragile and delicate, they teem with vitality. Even when battered or scorched, they cling tenaciously to life. Whenever I face adversity, I look at these photos and remind myself that fate is not something imposed upon us—it is something we each determine for ourselves. Instead of casting blame, we should emulate these plants: rising and striving ever harder in life.
What enables these wildflowers to flourish amidst arid, rocky terrain, devoid of abundant water or nutrients? It is their sheer will to live—a steadfast anchor that empowers us to overcome obstacles and move toward a brighter future.
So, what exactly is this "will"? It is the determination to surmount challenges, no matter how arduous or grueling they may be. Such is life; there is no red-carpet path leading straight to success. Every journey is strewn with obstacles—boulders large and small—that impede our progress. The path represents our individual life journeys, while the boulders symbolize the challenges we encounter along the way. Small stones represent minor setbacks we can easily surmount, whereas massive boulders signify formidable trials requiring immense effort and perseverance to overcome. What do you do when faced with such difficulties? Do you press on with determination, or do you retreat to the starting line? Some choose to summon all their willpower and resolve to conquer these hardships, believing that true success demands an investment of both effort and determination. As our great President Ho Chi Minh once said:
Nothing is hard when the will is strong,
A wavering heart is the only wrong.
Carve through mountains, fill the sea
With iron resolve, you will be free.
In life, we encounter many inspiring examples of people who have overcome immense adversity. A prime example is Nicholas James "Nick" Vujicic—born in 1982—an Australian evangelist and motivational speaker of Serbian descent. Nick was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. From childhood, he struggled on mental, emotional, and physical levels, yet he ultimately chose to confront his disability head-on. He travels the globe sharing his story, offering hope and a message about finding meaning in life despite physical limitations. He went on to graduate from university and became a renowned speaker on the subject of taking control of one's life.
How were they able to achieve such extraordinary things? It was through sheer willpower and an intense love for life. They built their lives amidst countless hardships and challenges, relying on perseverance, patience, and a determination to triumph over their destiny. They are like sunflowers, always turning toward the sun. In this struggle, they were never alone; supported and encouraged by family, friends, and society, they found the courage and confidence to overcome their circumstances, their fate, and the obstacles lying ahead.
Just as birds bring the joy of song to the world and flowers add beauty and color to life, the indomitable spirit that refuses to yield to fate has bestowed upon these individuals something truly precious. Refusing to yield to fate instills in them the spirit and determination to rise above their circumstances and surpass their own limitations; they strive to lead meaningful, productive lives that contribute to society while easing the burden on their families. Though physically impaired, they are far from useless; through their own abilities, they have achieved great success and established their worth in society. To me, they are shining examples who teach us profound lessons about resilience and the will to succeed. They show us how to overcome life's obstacles to pursue our dreams and ambitions. They are true role models for everyone, especially today’s younger generation.
In contrast to these inspiring figures, there are those who easily lose heart and give up. When faced with challenges, they quickly become discouraged, surrendering to fate and resigning themselves to defeat before even making a genuine effort. Many students, for instance, feel disheartened when faced with difficult lessons and refuse to apply themselves to finding a solution. Consequently, they fail to make progress or achieve academic success. They constantly blame fate, believing that their failures are simply the result of a predetermined destiny.
I often recall my mother’s words: "No family stays rich for three generations, and no family stays poor for three generations." Life's hardships only serve to make us stronger and more resilient. Be brave enough to continue along the path you have chosen. Channel the boundless vitality of youth to overcome obstacles; be like the sunflower, always turning toward the sun to welcome the wonderful things awaiting you. Strive for your goals while you still have the chance.
