The Power of YES

Stop Thinking, Start Acting

By Deniz DaghanPublished about a year ago 3 min read

It was just another Tuesday evening at the cozy neighborhood café, where a group of friends gathered every week for their book club meeting. Surrounded by the scent of freshly brewed coffee and the warm glow of the fairy lights, they discussed the latest book on their reading list. This week, the conversation took an interesting turn.

"Hey, guys! I just finished reading this incredible book," said Emily, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she held up the cover. "It covers a range of topics that help people unlock their full potential and embrace personal growth. One of the concepts that really stood out to me is 'The Power of YES.'"

The group leaned in, intrigued by this new idea. Emily continued, "The power of 'yes' is about having the courage to say 'yes' to opportunities and experiences, even if they seem scary or challenging at first. By stepping outside our comfort zones, we can discover new passions and learn valuable life lessons.". Emily continued, "Oprah faced numerous setbacks in her early career. She was fired from her first job as a television reporter and was told she was 'unfit for TV.' But she didn't let that stop her. She said 'yes' to believing in herself and her abilities, which eventually led her to create 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' becoming the 'Queen of All Media.'"

The group mulled over this real-life example and how the power of 'yes' had helped Oprah reach new heights in her career. However, not everyone was convinced. Tom, a cautious, practical man, raised an eyebrow. "I'm not so sure about that. Sometimes, saying 'yes' can lead to trouble or even disaster. What about all those people who said 'yes' to risky investments and ended up losing everything in the financial crisis?"

A thoughtful silence fell over the group as they considered Tom's argument. Jane, a pragmatic lawyer, chimed in, "Tom has a point. It's essential to weigh the potential consequences before saying 'yes' to something. We can't just blindly accept every opportunity that comes our way. We need to be selective and make informed decisions."

Emily nodded in agreement. "You're both right. I didn't mean to suggest that we should say 'yes' to everything without considering the risks. But perhaps we can find a balance between embracing new opportunities and being cautious.

The power of 'yes' is more about opening ourselves up to new experiences and not letting fear hold us back."

Feeling inspired, they decided to challenge themselves and each other to say 'yes' to at least one new experience in the coming week, while also considering potential risks and consequences. They agreed to reconvene next week and share their adventures.

The group reconvened the following week, eager to share their experiences with the power of 'yes.' Over the past week, they had each taken on new challenges and embraced unexpected opportunities.

Emily shared her story first. "I always wanted to try painting but never had the courage to take a class. This week, I said 'yes' and joined a local art workshop. It was such a fun and rewarding experience!"

Tom, who had been initially skeptical, shared his experience with a smile. "I've always been too nervous to speak in public, but this week, I volunteered to give a presentation at work. I was terrified, but it went well, and I received positive feedback from my colleagues."

Sarah chimed in with her story. "I've been putting off a difficult conversation with a family member for months. This week, I said 'yes' to facing the situation head-on. It wasn't easy, but it helped us resolve some long-standing issues."

Jane also had a story to share. "I've always been intrigued by salsa dancing but never had the time or courage to try it. This week, I said 'yes' and attended a beginner's salsa class. I met some amazing people, and I'm looking forward to continuing."

As the group members shared their experiences, it became clear that embracing the power of 'yes' had a profound impact on their lives. They discovered new hobbies, developed new skills, and even found the courage to face difficult situations.

The power of 'yes' had transformed their lives, opening up a world of possibilities and growth. By embracing this mindset and engaging in thoughtful discussion, they learned that the power of 'yes,' when balanced with self-awareness and mindfulness, could change their lives for the better.
