The Harsh Reality of Dream Jobs

When Aspirations Meet Unseen Challenges: The True Cost of Pursuing Passion

By Glory MichaelPublished 2 years ago • 3 min read

In today’s era, the "dream job" more closely resembles the hope beacon that it should be. Most people are waiting for that ideal balance of purpose, passion, and financial compensation that they call the "dream job."Nevertheless, the path of gaining and keeping these highly sought-after roles is much more arduous than it should be. The path leading up to the "dream job" includes disappointment, strife, and sacrifice that most people ignore.

When we look at dream jobs, it's easy to be misled by the glamorous visions painted by the internet and television. We want to be doing something that we're passionate about with great people who surround us and make something positive. But the most enviable job isn't disappointment-free and stress-free. The thought that the perfect dream job isn't disappointment-free and stress-free just isn't realistic. All of the careers are faulty and sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side than it appears it should be.

Once people find the best careers for themselves, they are under great pressure to always perform at the best levels. The initial enthusiasm turns into tension with increasing pressure mounting up gradually. The employer might be placing great hopes upon the individuals, and the competitive nature of most businesses creates the kind of atmosphere wherein the safety of the job remains doubtful. The pressure converts into exhaustion and psychiatric distress when taking into account the journey of someone else that appears successful compared to us.

Financial realities are also included in the dream job myth. Even the most ideal dream jobs are full of fulfillment but do not always come with financial security. Artistic professions of art, music, and writing are filled with unpredictable incomes. Freelance experts and contract experts are sometimes caught up in the endless struggle for the next contract with the financial stress that comes with it. Even the experts with more traditional jobs are sometimes caught up with salary irregularities and the stress of doing their day's passion, sometimes crashes horribly with the need to bring home the bacon.

Moreover, the search for the ideal workplace at the cost of personal life happens at times. Longer hours and stressful shifts steal hours that are otherwise for loved ones and friends. Most professionals sacrifice the work-life balance that they are otherwise enjoying with strained relationships and diminished quality of life. What began with great enthusiasm turns into something that overwhelms the person with no place for self-care and relaxation that they were enjoying otherwise.

The fear of failing is another familiar feeling for individuals pursuing their dream careers. With passion hanging in the balance, the stakes are just too great for people with the fear of making the wrong move. The fear of making mistakes holds people back from innovating and thinking creatively since it makes people hesitant about taking the plunge and trying new things. The need for the perfect impression gets professionals avoiding the need for assistance or the admission of difficulties, keeping them isolated.

Interestingly, job satisfaction is not necessarily the same as passion. Individuals discover that the aspects of the work they enjoyed in the beginning, become infuriating in the long run. The drudgery—the meetings, the deadlines, the paperwork—can overwhelm the creative elements that initially motivated them. To add insult to injury, the new job excitement wears off sooner or later, and the job becomes complacent or unfulfilling.

For others, the bitter realities of that ideal job make them reconsider the aspirations they've made for their careers. Changing majors sends them into terror, especially because they've worked so hard and put in so much time in the field they're now ready to leave behind. But the change can be freeing at the same time. Most working professionals find that they're better suited to something else, and the realization that follows brings greater fulfillment. Being able to adapt and change gears is essential in the constantly changing modern workplace. In the final analysis, the quest for the ideal dream job turns out to be a double-edged sword. Even the mere contemplation of doing something that you are dreaming of sounds wonderful, life turns out to be filled with challenges. From financial insecurity to the pressure of performance, the journey puts to the test the resilience of individuals. It should be done with a realistic attitude that whatever the most fanciful of the careers are, they hold the challenges of nature. Lastly, it is the balance of passion, practicality, and self-awareness that helps people withstand the complications of the journey while enjoying the well-being of life.
