The Financially Literate Youtuber – Patricia Bright

I started watching Patricia a few years ago. I was particularly curious about this young girl from my home country that had found a way to leave her 9-5 job to create this mega YouTube channel with partnerships from big brands and a lifestyle channel that goes from makeups to hauls to daily living to being financially literate to balancing family life with 2 kids and pregnancy progressions during and after.

With almost 3 million YouTube subscribers and about 1.2M followers on Instagram and a NetWorth of about a million dollars, Patricia is really killing it in the game. She has a background in accountancy and finance and was an intern with the investment bank, Merril lynch and has often told stories of how she wasn’t born with a silver spoon. Born to immigrant parents in London who struggled to make ends meet, one attribute she took from her parents was hard work and seeing how her parents were able to build something from nothing, she was also determined to make something of herself. Her entrepreneurship spirit has always been there as she referenced making hair for folks in her high school days.

The advent of the social media world has brought in a new stream of business that wasn’t readily available before and it’s good to give honor to whom honor is due - the veterans that saw this as something that could go somewhere and took the risk. I don’t think she knew how huge this would be but I’m glad she took the risk and is now heavily rewarded.

One thing that also struck me about Patricia is the openness to discuss seemingly controversial issues from plastic surgery, to marital issues to discussing all the remedies she used when her second daughter had eczema a few months after she was born etc. These vulnerabilities are what endears her to the heart of many.

Another thing she has done successfully is branching out from traditional YouTube et social media partnerships to make money through real estate investing, writing books and most recently teaching financial literacy to young adults which is a financial skill that comes handy these days. She recently founded the Break platform which serves as a means to do give back by paying it forward. The platform currently has its own YouTube channel and a Podcast named ‘Caught Off Guard’.

One key attribute I’ve also noticed is she runs this as a business with paid employees, hence the structure you see across her various platforms and not something that is just thrown together and is wishy washy. She also shares her highs and lows, which gives a relatability factor to her audience and not a curated life that is paramount with influencers these days.

I remember one of her videos I watched that talked about the permutations and combinations that Influencers do to edit their pictures before posting and the limitless number of apps used for the process. I guess that narrowed down the fact that the Influencer path wasn’t for me. The financial literacy part though has been very helpful. Another video that stuck with me was the plastic surgery video where she talked about a number of things she had done to her body. I wouldn’t tow the same line but I could understand how everyone struggles with one form of insecurity or the other. The third video was the one she filmed about marital issues and the effect COVID has had on her marriage and how her and her husband were working through it. The last would be how she navigated treating her kid for eczema in the early months after she was born. I could see a human being struggling to balance work and personal life and still doing a darn good job of it.

Overall, talk about pure black girl magic. You can find her at the following handles:
